However, by late September transiting Chiron will be within orb of a trine to his natal Earth and that long lasting aspect should make him a Cinderella--all he will need is a fairy godmother. The birth of Jesus, according to gospel, was an event predicted by astrologers, or "wise men." These sky watchers did not have telescopes, so whatever they saw was apparent with the naked eye that "rose in the east." Whether the star they followed was a comet, a supernova, a conjunction of Jupiter, Venus,and the fixed star Regulus, or the double occultation of Jupiter and the Moon or Jupiter and Venus, we might never know. What we do know is that the life of Jesus and his teachings as celebrated by most Christian religions has had an impact for more than 2000 years. Christmas began as a religious ceremony with various dates. December 25 was chosen by Catholic Church as a day for the Christ Mass and probably designed to coincide with a pagan holiday and the winter solstice to satisfy pagan converts. Celebrating Christmas with gifts, feasts, and parties, however, became controversial. It became so frivolous an event that Puritans and other serious religious folk banned the custom, determined to take the "merry" out of the holy day. In 1640, for instance, a law was passed in Scotland that made celebrating "Yule vacations" illegal. The Church of Scotland, a Presbyterian church, suppressed Christmas celebrations until 1958 when it became a public holiday. Christmas festivals were illegal in Great Britain in 1647 -1660, Russia under Stalin banned all holidays including Christmas and Christmas trees between 1929 -1935, and Cuba banned Christmas in 1969 because it interfered with harvests. It is no coincidence that Christmas occurs near the winter solstice and the shortest days of sunlight for those in the northern hemisphere. Gift giving, indulging in an abundance of creature comforts, and bright holiday light displays bring a cheerful message of hope and optimism during the darkest time of year.This is a holiday when we take comfort by being surrounded by family and friends and relish an opportunity to be generous and charitable. So, wishing all my readers a Merry Christmas, whether you celebrate the birth of Jesus or not. It is the spirit of the season not your belief system that is important. |
